‘Captain America: Civil War’ Trailer: It’s Time to Choose a Side

With Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans promising a big surprise on Jimmy Kimmel Live, we knew it had to be something special — that something is the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War. Not a teaser, but an actual, full trailer, dramatically highlighting the growing divide between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, which will divide the Avengers and pit them against one another in what could be Marvel’s most epic film yet.

The trailer begins right where the post-credits scene in Ant-Man left off, with Steve and Bucky in a warehouse of some sort, the latter seemingly having had his memories restored. From there, William Hurt’s General Ross declares that superheroes have become a threat to the world as we know it, accusing Cap of being little more than a vigilante.

Tony sides with the government and Cap is forced to essentially go rogue, taking Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Hawkeye and Bucky with him. We also get our first look at Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther in action, cutting a striking figure in that fierce costume. No sign of Tom Holland, who is set to make his MCU debut as Spider-Man ahead of his new solo film, but there’s plenty here to chew on, particularly the more dramatic moments between Steve and Tony.

While there are a lot of characters in the movie that you don’t see in the trailer — like Ant-Man, Vision, Crossbones and Baron Zemo — if you look closely, you do get a look at Martin Freeman’s still unnamed character on the right in the grey suit.

The trailer also builds to a pretty great money shot, with Bucky and Cap teaming up on Iron Man, who puts up one hell of a fight:

Marvel also revealed the first official posters for Civil War, touting the tagline “Divided We Fall”:

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
