As Gavin DeGraw prepares to release his fifth CD later this year, anxious fans are being treated to an upbeat, fun preview of the album. And with his latest single, 'Best I Ever Had', DeGraw is trying out a different sound than we're used to from him.

Though the new single is upbeat and full of energy, DeGraw recorded 'Best I Ever Had' in a more organic, acoustic form. Some might call it indie/folk-influenced, but the song still has a full sound, complete with synthesizer humming in the background throughout. The lyrics are loaded with pop culture and headline news references that make listening to 'Best I Ever Had' fun.

Melt Antarctica, savin’ Africa
I failed algebra and I misused some times
We’re at war again, save the world again
You can all join in, but you can’t smoke inside

You said “Take me home, I can’t stand this place
‘Cause there’s too many hipsters and I just can’t relate”
You’re my neon gypsy, my desert rain
You’re my “Helter Skelter”, oh how can I explain that

While the lyrics to 'Best I Ever Had' are fast and furious during the verses, the chorus is catchy and gives everyone a chance to sing along.

You’re the best I ever had
And I’m trying not to get stuck in my head
But I read that soda kills you and Jesus saves
On the bathroom wall where I saw your name
You’re the best I ever had
I won’t be the same

By this point in 'Best I Ever Had', it's clear that DeGraw is trying something different with his music. It's also clear that it works. The lyrics are odd and different and memorable and cool. Verse two continues with more of the same:

Night sky full of drones, this neighborhood of clones
I’m looking at the crowd and they’re staring at their phones
They groom the coast line here, the sun will disappear (Oh God!)
And maybe once a year, I think they’ll clean my car

Caught my reflection, drop the call
I’ve been medicated with cigarettes and alcohol
I got vertigo, no I can’t see straight
I got obligations though I’m usually late but

This song is perfect for playing over and over on the radio. I can listen to it several times, and find something new and unique in the lyrics every time.

Hey West Virginia, Hey North Dakota
I think I love you, but don’t even know you
Hey Massachusetts, Hey Minnesota
I think I love you, but don’t even know you
Hey Carolina, Hey Oklahoma
I think I love you, but don’t even know you
Hey Alabama, Hey California
I think I love you, but don’t even know you

'Best I Ever Had' song is destined to be another hit for Gavin DeGraw, and possibly his biggest yet. The less amped-up sound will set the rock-influenced singer/songwriter with a more mainstream listening audience. If 'Best I Ever Had' is representative of the rest of DeGraw's upcoming CD, it could prove to be a landmark album for him. Take a listen:
