Comstock is way down on the South Eastern border of Texas. It is about 30 miles North East of Del Rio on the Rio Grande. It holds the history of the Native Americans who lived here long before we arrived and before there were borders. If you are a nature and history buff then this is for you.

Comstock and the surrounding areas are home to the Seminole Canyon State Park and offers camping, hiking, biking, nature study and lots of history. You do have to have a guide to hike the canyon but what better way to learn about the canyon, caves and pictographs that cover the area.

Take for example the Fate Bell Shelter, it is one of the oldest caves in North America and therefore contains some of the oldest pictographs known. The rock paintings tell stories of inhabitants that lived there some 4,000+ years ago. Some of the stories are well known by the staff while others are still a mystery. Can you imagine that something that was painted that long ago still exists? Tours of the art are conducted by park staff and the Rock Art Foundation.

The Seminole Canyon received it's name, however, to honor the U.S. Army’s Seminole-Negro Indian Scouts. These men protected the area from Apache and Comanche Indians between 1872 and 1914.The canyon became a State park in 1973.

Something else you will find in the canyon are remnants of the nations second transcontinental railroad, better known as the Southern Pacific. The railroad connected the two coasts and brought settlers and business to the area. Ranching was a large part of the industry during the day and still continues in the area outside of the park.

The landscape it's self is beautiful with lots of natural vegetation, caves, rock formations, crystal clear water ways, star gazing in the unobscured skies of West Texas and more.

To find out more about the park visit Texas Parks and Wildlife website. You can also visit other parks and historical sites that surround the area like Devils River State Natural Area, Kickapoo Cavern State Park, Amistad Reservoir, and more.
