The Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian is found in Amarillo and explores the life and culture of the Plains Indians. There is the museum it's self to explore but there are also interactive activities like music, dance, galleries and even a trading post. Here's a look at a few of the special activities you will find at the Kwahadi museum. The Kwahadi dancers have been around since 1944; performing all over the U.S. and overseas for conventions, tour groups, churches, fundraisers, community events and more. In fact, they are the most tenured group in the state.

The museum it's self is a walk through adobe style and is filled with fine art, carvings, game animals of the plains, photographs, bronze statues, pottery, bead work, rugs, artifacts and more. The artifacts cover the culture and ways of the people of the Pueblo and Plains.

There is a lot of history to be learned and you will find books, manuscripts and more documenting the history behind the Indians of Plains. In fact, the museum is in possession of over 3000 books and 5000 photographs that belonged to artist and author Thomas Mails. He served as a consultant to Kevin Costner's movie 'Dances with Wolves'.  Once you've toured the museum and hopefully caught a live show from the Kwahadi dancers you can't forget to visit the trading post.

The trading post is full of hand crafted works from native artisans that you can buy as souvenirs to document your trip. Everything from major works of art and bronzes to jewelry, clothing, books, t-shirts, caps, rugs, pottery, dolls, postcards and more can be found in the trading post.

If you like fun but enjoy learning as well this is a great place to visit for the entire family.
