What a Difference a Year Can Make in Your Life – Shay Takes a Look Back

shay before and after

What a difference a year makes. It seems the older I get the faster the year seems to fly by. This past year definitely went by fast but that’s because it was packed full of life changing events, mainly my cancer diagnosis. This time 1 year ago I was looking forward to my last round of chemo, which was July 28th. That was a happy day for sure. However, that wasn’t the only thing happening at this time last year.

We lost my boyfriends dad to cancer a few months before and were still dealing with his death when we found out his mom had broken her hip. She was in a rehabilitation facility learning to walk again before she could go home.

Moving was another big event for me last year. We ended up moving to a home with much more space. Because of my going through cancer and treatment we had to push our house hunting to the back burner for awhile, but we also had to be moved before school started at the beginning of August. We did a lot of searching online first, but finally found this great house with a pool. I was excited about having a pool but I wasn’t able to use it because I couldn’t be in the sun. So this year I am having a ball, swimming as much as I possibly can, even at night!

Eating what I want to again. Since my immune system was completely shot by the end of treatment I was not allowed to have any fresh fruit or vegetables. Why? Fresh fruits and vegetables can sometimes carry e-coli or other bacteria that could make someone with a compromised immune system very sick. This year I’m eating salads, cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, asparagus and cauliflower. You don’t realize how much you miss food until you can’t have it.

Hair! This time last year I was bald and had been for 4 months. This was a blessing and a curse. I had a wig that I would wear if I was going to work, doing a TV commercial or radio remotes. However, those can get hot and itchy in the middle of July but I could also just leave the wig at home and go a la natural too which was quite nice.

Those are just a few things that were occupying my time one year ago. At times it seems like yesterday and at others it seems like a lifetime ago. I learned, though, to never take things for granted, always cherish your time with family and friends and realize you can’t control everything.
