Now when I grew up on San Jose, La Salle, Capitol, Congress, and State Street on Abilene's northside, we had a lot of crazy superstitions that we all followed religiously. To this day I still do follow some of these traditions I'll share with you now:

I stay with some of these mainly because they're like family traditions. Here are a few of the most popular food superstitions to kick off the New Year right. The one that I never fail on New Year's day I will have a big ole pot of blackeyed-peas and let's not forget the cornbread.

Honestly, I don't know why the blackeyed-peas stuck in my head as it does, but it has something to do with having a job and making a living all these years. As far as the rest of these they come from the old neighborhoods and mainly family traditions.

The Spanish have a lot of traditions, one is that eating 12 grapes as the clock chimes 12, assures men will increase their libido.

Still, there are many other foods like Brown-Butter Creamed Winter Greens, Hoppin' John Salad with Molasses Dressing, Cuban-Style Roast Suckling Pig, Salt Cod in Tomato Garlic Confit, New Year's Orange and Brandy Cake, Pecan Shortbread Cookies and Coffee-Glazed Doughnuts.
