As we are still having warm days here in West Texas, it appears that the snake population in Abilene and the Big Country is on the rise. I've spoken with many home and business owners and the Abilene Animal Shelter and Rescue the Animals' Paul Washburn. Paul says "it seems as though the rattlesnake population is exploding in Abilene."

Does The Rattlesnake Vaccine Work On Pets?

So my advice to anyone with outdoor pets, especially dogs that reside outdoors is, to get them vaccinated with the rattlesnake vaccine. My veterinarian says give your fur babies at least a fighting chance, and yes, the rattlesnake vaccine works on most all pets even cats.

I went to purchase some glue traps from Jackson Brothers, to put around my home property to see about catching these rattlesnakes. That's where I learned that snakes are showing up just about everywhere. Some snakes have been reported getting into houses through the plumbing, cracks in walls, and through the clothes dryer exhaust vent.

To keep snakes out of my house, I'm placing these real inexpensive glues traps near all the obvious points of entry, and guess what they are working. I'll warn you though be extra careful if you try it and if you don't feel safe or comfortable disposing of these low-life slithery critters, call a professional exterminator to dispose of them for you.

The only thing I highly recommend is that if you have children, cats or dogs, please keep them all away from the glue traps. If you're working around your tool shed or lawn mowing equipment please "stop, look and listen" for the common signs of deadly snakes in the area.

Again there are exterminators that can help eradicate the snakes from your place. And, remember to vaccinate your pets with the rattlesnake vaccine you'll find at your veterinarian.
