‘Stranger Things’ Star David Harbor Going Red For ‘Hellboy’ Reboot
David Harbour may not have landed a Marvel Comics movie role, but he'll soon be a tall hellsome man with a red right hand in another comic adaptation.
Late last night, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola took to Facebook to announce that there was actually a new movie based on his iconic horror comic coming. The news came as a surprise to many fans, as for the past few years director Guillermo Del Toro and actor Ron Perlman, who worked together on the first two Hellboy films, had been trying to get a third off the ground. The definitive "no" was given just a few months ago, and now we apparently know why.
This time director Neil Marshall, the man behind The Descent and some Game of Thrones episodes (including Season Two's "Blackwater"), will take the helm, guiding David Harbour's Hellboy through the rigors of being the heir apparent to Hell and the bringer of Armageddon. There are virtually no other details about the movie at the moment, but Mignola has promised news about this reboot will be coming soon. Likely we'll learn a tiny bit more at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
Fan response has hit a range of emotions, with a larger percentage feeling a bit betrayed by the idea of moving on from Del Toro and Perlman, both of whom championed the character and franchise for more than a decade. While Del Toro has gone on to have a lot of success at the box office, Perlman is still a cult favorite actor with a terribly devout fan base. For many, Perlman is Hellboy.
However, even in an age of sequels to blockbuster comic films, a third entry in a franchise that started in 2004 is likely a bit of a stretch for most studios. Especially when that franchise is based on a minor comic and the invested director commands a nine-figure budget in 2016.
David Harbour is a hot commodity right now though, and he's got the potential to be a completely different Hellboy than Perlman was in the original two films. It'll be a while until we get to see the Stranger Things star in hornhead's makeup, but we're willing to wait and see before dismissing this reboot entirely.
