If there’s one thing that Abilene and the Big Country don’t skimp on, it’s restaurants. Between Abilene itself and the surrounding West Texas towns, you won’t run out of hometown options for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

We took to the KEAN 105 Facebook page and posed a simple question. The result was 51 comments from around the Big Country.

So, whether you’re a longtime local or just passing through, here are some Big Country restaurants our listeners love that aren’t in Abilene.

Non-natives may be tempted to think that the smaller a town in the Abilene area may be, the fewer food options are available. Places like Stamford and Coleman, both of which appear several times on this list, prove otherwise and show that good food isn’t limited by geography.

As previously mentioned, the restaurants on this list are hometown restaurants — no burger or chicken chains here!

Part of the charm that comes with the wide-open spaces of the Big Country is knowing you’ll find homestyle Texas hospitality wherever you go. Supporting small businesses and hometown establishments is a great way to repay that hospitality when you’re traveling.

Abilenians looking for a change of scenery can also find use in this list. Many of the restaurants in the list above are a short drive out of Abilene (perfect for a Friday or Saturday night out), and others make an even better day trip.

My personal recommendation off of this list is the Runaway Train Cafe in Brownwood if you’re burgers-and-fries folks with an appreciation for restored trains. Their BLT sandwich hits the spot for lighter meals, too.

Consider this list an outside-of-Abilene dining to-do list, and let me know if I missed one of your favorites.
